You’re right to be cautious about talent agencies. My cousin, an aspiring actor and model, has encountered a lot of scam artists in the field.

It might be best to talk with someone who is able to tell a respectable agency from one that will take advantage of you. My cousin talked with some local actors who were well-known, as well as professors at his university, and they helped him out.

Asking for money up-front is a big warning sign. So is making promises that sound unrealistic (in 6 months you’ll be in Hollywood, etc).
