But what are the best smaller search engines and where is the best FREE way to submit to them? Also do you know any tricks and tips for increasing your position on the search engines?

Forget search engines straight away, yes they are important to get ranked in but will not help build traffic to your website, a few sites for you to look into and get started to promote your webiste

try http://www.submitexpress.com i did, they submit your site to the top engines for free.. you will need to confirm your listings via your email address so give a real one!

Also when it comes to google, submit your site yourself as often as you can.

Get as many reciprocal links as you can with other sites that would be of interest to your guests. it all helps.
